What is an essential oil?
Why is doTERRA different?
How to Use doTERRA Safely
🌿 Essential Oil Usage & Safety 🌿
“When you use high-quality essential oils in the appropriate amount, they can absolutely be safe enough to use at home and on yourself and your family. High quality essential oils will have gone through extensive testing to ensure that they are safe, are pure, and have correct amount of concentration. Like anything else you use in your home or on your children, essential oils are safe where you adhere to the recommended dosage amounts and use them within the proper parameters. Among the many benefits of essential oils, one major advantage is that they offer peace of mind to parents who worry about using chemical-ridden products in their children, or in their home for cleaning, cooking, and other tasks. Essential oils are a safe alternative to many of the products you see on grocery store shelves that contain synthetic toxins or chemicals that could be harmful. Learning about proper use and dosage will allow you to safely use essential oils at home and on your family, while enjoying the benefit of a natural product.”

☆ QUICK TIPS ☆
🌿 Know Your Product –
Unfortunately, there is no governing body that is required to regulate essential oils. So, while yes you can grab oils from pretty much every grocery store or Amazon now – you can’t be sure you can trust what’s in that bottle. It could be ONE DROP of essential oil and labeled 100% pure therapeutic grade… This is why education is so important! After so much research, I am without a doubt, completely comfortable choosing dōTERRA for my family and I. They have created a RIGOROUS testing system through multiple 3rd parties to ensure, every drop in every bottle, is safe, pure, and potent. They always reassure us with full transparency of their entire testing and result process – I can quite literally look up the test results for every individual item I have… within seconds. Again, I stress.. KNOW YOUR PRODUCT.

🌿 Start Slow –
Just like when you are trying anything new for the first time – start SLOWLY. Let your body adjust to these new solutions – starting with topical application on the bottom of your feet is a great place to start! You will experience different changes, some helping support and relieve your body, and some may be some of the toxins trying to leave your body to make room for these natural solutions. Listen to your body, let it be a process, and be sure to educate yourself about what the oils you are using are doing for your body!

🌿 Dilution –
Dilution is one of our best friends with essential oils! Not only is it crucial when working with younger children, babies, elderly, or sensitive skin – but it also helps the oils work through the thick barriers of your skin to be able to get the most out of our topical applications! I highly suggesting finding a dilution chart you trust and love and save it to your phone for quick reference and stay educated about which oils you are using! dōTERRA is wonderful about informing us of “HOT” oils (can be sensitive to skin, should generally always be diluted) and “NEAT” oils (do not create as much of a sensitivity for direct topical application) – There are so many kinds of carrier oils, I prefer using fractionated coconut oil (stays in liquid form) – but many others work! Coconut, Almond, Grapeseed, Jojoba, Olive oils etc, or even an unscented lotion! Get in the habit of diluting for safe and effective topical use!

🌿Storage –
When it comes to using essential oils in the home, one major key to keeping your family safe is proper essential oil storage. For obvious reasons, essential oils should not be left out where small children can reach them, and bottles should always be sealed up with their lids after use.
In addition to keeping essential oils in a safe place, it is important to keep the oils out of direct sunlight and away from heat, as light and heat can alter the chemical structure of the oils and lessen their efficacy. By storing your oils in a cool, dry place, you can preserve the delicate yet powerful properties they possess, allowing you to reap as many essential oil benefits as possible.
Lastly, make sure you are storing and using your oils in safe containers. Glass, stainless, or ceramic should be used to avoid plastics or toxins being pulled from the other materials, especially when we are consuming our oils!

🌿Photosensitive Oils –
There are some of our essential oils that have a photosensitivity, mainly citrus oils, and therefore should be avoided wearing in the sun within 12 hours of application. Citrus oils have a rich taste and powerful health benefits – there are still plenty of ways to enjoy them through the summer months such as using topically in places that don’t spend much time in the direct sun (bottom of feet or underneath t-shirt) or in our water bottles. But be aware of those oils and oil blends when that sun decides to finally make it’s appearance this year!

🌿 Aromatic Use –
“By putting essential oils directly into the air we breathe, we can influence the feeling of our environment, and, more powerfully, our own emotions.
Other Uses and Benefits
While smell is a great tool, there are other reasons that diffusing essential oils can be beneficial to you:
- It can purify the air in your home.
- Some oils can help maintain feelings of clear breathing and open airways.
- To minimize the effects of seasonal threats.
- Only a small amount of oil needs to be used if you’re using it in an ultrasonic diffuser. This means you can use one bottle of essential oil many times before you’ll need more.
If you don’t have a diffuser, there are other ways to enjoy the benefits of diffusing. Try adding a few drops of essential oil to your palms and cup them over your nose while you inhale deeply. This is an easy technique especially when you’re on the go. Or, add some drops of oil to a glass spray-bottle with water and spritz around the room.
The combinations of essential oils you can diffuse are endless. And, like each of you, they are as unique as you would like them to be.”

🌿 Topical Application –
Topical application is great way to use your oils – We can make our own roller bottle blends for quick and easy use and thanks to their versatility, we can apply the oils right to our area of concern and they will not only localize to the zone of need, but also work through your blood stream to support your whole body! When applying make sure to ALWAYS avoid oils going into your eyes or inside of your ears! If they do – remember water will just separate! Using a cotton swab with a carrier oil can be a helpful trick to grab that oil out! Always supervise the use of your oils, especially with the little quick hands!

🌿 Internal Usage –
While many of our dōTERRA oils can provide several benefits when used internally, EDUCATION and SAFETY are of the up-most importance! ALWAYS follow the recommended directions for use. Refer to the dōTERRA essential oil supplement bottles (any dōTERRA oil safe for internal consumption will have “SUPPLEMENT FACTS” directly on the bottle, if there in no ‘Supplement Facts’ that oil is NOT recommended for internal use. STAY INFORMED!) Product information pages for instructions and recommended use are a great tool. Essential oils are incredibly powerful, less is always more. Start SLOWLY, listen to your body, and stay in contact with your physician when introducing new things into your daily regimen.

I cannot put into words the relief and empowerment we have found from making these subtle yet powerful changes in our home. Stay educated and aware of your daily habits is the best way to get the most out of your essential oils and ensure you are using them safely! 💕
